We would like to offer our warmest congratulations to you all for the REF results which have been announced this morning. The results highlight the outstanding research you have conducted over the past few years and will have a major impact as they form the basis for the distribution of £1.6 billion per annum in government research funding.
The headline news is that UCL has come second overall behind Oxford but ahead of Cambridge, the first time the dominance of Oxbridge has ever been broken. This is based on the standard power measure (the percentage of work rated 4* multiplied by number of staff submitted). When measured in terms of combined 4* and 3* work (the measure used in RAE2008), UCL beats both Oxford and Cambridge. As the Provost has stated, this marks a defining moment in higher education and is an incredible testament to the research undertaken by UCL staff and students.
In the unit of assessment: Psychology, Psychiatry & Neuroscience, where the majority of the staff in the Faculty were returned, the picture is even clearer. We come top on both measures of power by a long way, followed by King’s, Oxford, Edinburgh and Cambridge. This outcome is more impressive still bearing in mind that UCL submitted almost all (92%) of its eligible staff to the assessment process, while most other institutions were much more selective. Oxford for example submitted only 77%.

Also great to see that Clinical Medicine which included the Institute of Ophthalmology did equally well – also coming top on both measures of power!
